mist.

mist. is a portable aqueous ozone spray bottle that kills germs and viruses in seconds.

In this project, we try to tackle the problems of the hand sanitizers in the market, to convey a more efficient, safest, eco-friendly and replenishable alternative to personal disinfecting.

Team: Sangyu Xi, Lee Cusolito, and Xingyi jiang.

My role was managing the project progress and contributing to the research, sketching, prototyping, CAD, rendering, animation, and technical specification.

The design is currently in the final judgment stage of the Red Dot Design Concept Award.

Problem statement

To slow the transmission of the coronavirus, people are actively taking actions, such as using soap and water or hand sanitizer while on the go to sterilize their hands.

However, the media and research have unveiled the following problems of the existing hand sanitizers:

Aqueous ozone

Through research, we discovered that aqueous ozone, which is produced by the electrolysis method (below), will extract ozone, an effective hygiene gas, from water, and does not allow ozone to escape the water in a poisonous gas form until it has degraded into oxygen.

Safe

No alcohol needed.

Economic and easy

Ingredients are electricity and water.

Eco-friendly

No poisonous or bio-undegradable debris after use.

Natural and pleasing

No alcohol smell or stickiness anymore.

Sustainable

Use up to 100,000 times.

Value propositions

We conducted 3 rounds of user interviews with 11 people of different ages, gender, marital status, professionals, and income. Then we pinned out their pain points and ranked them into value propositions.

Customer discovery

Aesthetic inspiration

White communicates hygiene and trustworthiness; translucency and round corners convey the softness; fluent and flat form factor benefits portability...finally the simple and honest design is where I'm going for.

Ideations

The final design consists of 3 main parts:
White body, replaceable resin cartridge, and water tank

Exploded view

The assemble strategy allows the user to screw off the screws and take off one side plate to do the repair.

Capacity

We experiment with an existing aqueous ozone mister that shares the same capacity of battery and water tank with mist. and find out that mist. can last at least 3 days when it has been fully charged and with maximum water.

How the technology works

The resin cartridge absorbs the calcium and magnesium ions to soften the water, in order to increase the longevity of the units.

When the filtered water enters the electrolysis unit, the electricity will split the oxygen ions from the water and combine 3 of them over the membrane to form ozone.

User scenarios

Hold your mist with nozzle away from you.

Press the power button.

Aim the nozzle towards your hand and pull the trigger with your index finger to spray the mist.

Put the device away.

Packaging

To promote sustainability, mist. uses the authentic appearance of cardboard with minimal plant-based ink for the package, to reduce the environmental impact and ecological footprint.
